Fertility isn’t just about reproductive organs—it’s a reflection of your overall health, energy, and balance. Substances like alcohol, stimulants, and antidepressants can interfere with this delicate system, both physiologically and energetically. In my practice I have often seen young women who have exibited deficient heat signs while trying to concieve. These symptoms such as red tongue with no coat, night sweats, vaginal dryness, high thirst etc are usually seen at later ages of life during perimenopause or menopause. However, after doing a full intake I have discovered the correlation that often times they are on medications such as anti-depressents, stimulants, and/or small amounts of alcohol daily. Having your daily night cap can lead to added heat in the body making it harder to concieve.

🍷 Alcohol & Fertility
Western View:
Alcohol disrupts hormone production, delays ovulation, and impairs sperm quality (yourfertility.org.au).
Chinese Medicine View:
Alcohol generates Damp Heat and causes Liver Qi stagnation, which disrupts the Chong and Ren vessels—essential to fertility. Over time, alcohol dries Kidney Yin, creates heat in body leading to perimenopausal symptoms and hormonal depletion, poor egg quality, and lack of cervical fluids.

⚡ Stimulants & Fertility
Western View:
Stimulants may lower sperm count, alter hormone balance, and impact ovulation (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov).
Chinese Medicine View:
Stimulants are intensely Yang—they burn through energy and deplete Jing (Essence). This depletes Kidney Yin, disrupts sleep, increases anxiety, and contributes to Liver Blood deficiency—all of which impact reproductive health.

Antidepressants & Fertility
Western View:
Some antidepressants can interfere with libido, ovulation, and sperm motility. They may elevate prolactin levels, which can suppress ovulation and menstrual regularity (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov).
Chinese Medicine View:
Antidepressants are often warm or hot in nature. Over time, they can create internal Heat, especially in the Heart and Liver systems. This Heart Fire can disturb the Shen (spirit), cause insomnia, restlessness, and emotional numbness. In women, this may result in Heat in the Blood, disrupting the menstrual cycle and ovulation. In men, it can reduce Essence and disturb normal sperm production.
